Warrington Wolves prepare for glory ahead of Magic Weekend

On the weekend of the 3rd and 4th June, thousands of Rugby League fans will travel to the iconic St James’ Park to watch their beloved team at this year’s Magic Weekend extravaganza.

Spare a thought for a group of Warrington Wolves fans who will have made their journey on 2 wheels from one side of the country to the other. Leaving the Halliwell Jones Stadium on Thursday 1st June, 20 cyclists will attempt to travel to Newcastle in time for the Warrington Wolves game against Hull FC on Sunday 4th June. To make the challenge even more challenging, they will visit every UK-based Super League Club along the way!

As part of the Warrington Wolves Sustainability strategy which saw the introduction of electric vehicles and the 1st team squad wearing playing shirts made with recyclable materials last year, the 300 Bike Ride will again be sponsored by Jacobs (www.jacobs.com). A key focus of Jacobs is to offset their carbon footprint as part of their Plan Beyond approach and partnerships with the Warrington Wolves and the Warrington Wolves Charitable Foundation are key to achieving this.

Jacobs Vice President, Greg Willetts is delighted to extend the partnership with the charity;

“The 300 Bike Ride and the Warrington Wolves Charitable Foundation support many initiatives which align with Jacobs’ core values in areas such as mental health and wellbeing, education, inclusion and diversity, and sustainability. We employ 1,300 people in Warrington so we know how much the town values the Foundation’s work. We wish the riders a safe and enjoyable journey to Newcastle.”

From the Chair

Wolves Foundation Chair, Peter Astley MBE, who is one of the cyclists this year was quick to highlight the importance of going green whilst raising vital funds to help the charity continue to change the lives of people in Warrington through sport;

“The Warrington Wolves have made a commitment to protecting the environment by implementing a number of new initiatives this year on matchdays which will help offset their carbon footprint moving forward. The annual Magic Weekend Bike Ride provides a perfect opportunity for the Warrington Wolves Foundation to play our part whilst raising money to support our Rugby League, Disability and Health & wellbeing projects for those most in need.

Climate change is the greatest threat to the world’s population and as an organisation that is supporting and developing the young people of Warrington, it’s important that we do what we can to raise the profile of sustainability. Riding a bike is nearly 10 times more carbon-efficient than the most efficient petrol car so with 20 cyclists taking part this year, our footprint will be reduced by approximately 150 kg.

To have the support of Jacobs again this year on what will be the biggest challenge to date is vital as it will help highlight the economic, health and environmental benefits of going green and how every Warrington Wolves supporter can help create a sustainable future for everyone by making small changes in their life.”

To show their support for the Warrington Wolves, the cyclists will be seen pedalling over the Pennines in special edition cycling shirts which pay homage to the iconic Wire jersey which will be worn by the players at St James’ Park.

The shirt will be worn by the Wire twice this season – at Magic Weekend at St James’ Park against Hull FC on Sunday 4 June and against St Helens at The Halliwell Jones Stadium on Friday 7 July as part of the “Retro Round”.  The famous 90s shirt is a fans’ favourite from the Wilderspool era, featuring the logo from the pre-Super League era.
