Wheelchair Rugby Takes Over Golden Square: An Inspiring Weekend

This past weekend, the Warrington Wolves wheelchair rugby league team took to Golden Square Warrington to showcase their incredible sport and invite the community to their free taster event on February 15th, at the Old Fishmarket, from 9am to 3pm.

The atmosphere was buzzing as team members handed out flyers, interacted with the public, and gave people the unique opportunity to experience wheelchair rugby firsthand. Visitors of all ages – from 7 to 81 years old – got into one of our specially designed wheelchairs and had a go at this fast-paced, inclusive sport.

A Successful Weekend of Engagement and Fundraising

The two-day event wasn’t just about raising awareness; it was also a successful fundraiser for the team, with over £250 raised to support their activities. The response from the public was heartwarming, with numerous people enquiring about how they or their loved ones could get involved.

One particularly touching moment was shared by Bradley Gleave, one of our wheelchair players:

"Waiting in line at Starbucks, this kid came up to me, handed me one of our flyers, and said, ‘Can you sign this, please?’ It made my day."

These small moments reflect the impact wheelchair rugby can have—not just as a sport, but as a source of inspiration and community connection.

Coach’s Perspective: A Weekend to Remember

Head Coach Isaac Williams summed up the weekend perfectly:

"What a weekend promoting the sport of wheelchair rugby league in Warrington, especially our Wolves team! We had people trying out the chairs for the first time, from ages 7 to 81, and raised a fantastic amount of funds. If you’re free on February 15th, come down and give it a try yourself! Big thanks to Golden Square Warrington for the opportunity."
