When Ian Stapleton first laced up his boots and took to the rugby league field 36 years ago, he had no idea his journey would one day bring him to coaching the future stars of England Wheelchair Rugby. Now, as a coach with the prestigious England Wheelchair Futures Programme, Ian is helping to shape and inspire the next generation of elite wheelchair rugby players.
Ian has been a dedicated volunteer with the Warrington Wolves Community Foundation for some time, currently serving as the assistant wheelchair coach for the Warrington Wolves Wheelchair Rugby League team. Every Tuesday evening at 7 pm, Ian can be found working with players at Cardinal Newman Catholic High School, helping both experienced athletes and newcomers develop their skills and passion for the sport.
Reflecting on his recent appointment to the England Wheelchair Futures Programme, Ian shared his excitement: "What an absolute honour. Thirty-six years ago, when I started playing RL, not once did I imagine that all these years later, I'd be coaching the next generation of England Wheelchair Rugby players! Made up to be a coach of the England Wheelchair Futures Programme, being able to help coach and nurture the next @sebastienbechara, @lewisking_rl, @tomhalliwell7, or @nathanc_01. The next goal is England head coach – @tomcoyd!"
Ian’s commitment to wheelchair rugby league has been marked by his incredible work ethic, genuine love for the players, and a deep passion for the sport. His recent session with the England Wheelchair Futures Programme was a historic one, with enthusiastic participation from kids and women alike, alongside the essential support from players, coaches, officials, and staff from England Wheelchair RL. Ian couldn’t be prouder of the energy and passion everyone brought to the day.
The England Wheelchair Futures Programme is about more than just skill development; it’s a gateway to opportunities, inspiration, and inclusivity. For Ian, the ultimate goal is to inspire players to dream big and aim high, just as he has in his own rugby league journey.
Congratulations to Ian Stapleton for this incredible achievement – the future of England Wheelchair Rugby League is certainly in inspiring hands!
