PenPal Project

Imagine when you were a child receiving a letter from your favourite sports star. It is well documented that many children struggle with basic literacy skills due to the popularity of new media. Through our Pen Pals project, we aim to engage children with the art of writing and reading and provide them with the base to be successful. By using the rugby club and its sporting stars we are able to engage some of the more harder to reach groups by pairing them up with a real-life sporting Pen Pal. With support, the children prepare their letters, purchase their own stamps and then post the letters. In return they will receive a handwritten, inspiring and motivational reply.

A teacher at Sankey Valley St James Primary School said, “The personable approach to this project has captured everyone’s imagination and the lettersĀ received back from the players have been amazing. The smiles on the children’s faces whilst improving their literacy skills is priceless.”
