Every year, the Foundation’s Family Mile brings together families and friends who run, walk or dance their way around Victoria Park to raise money for the Warrington Wolves’ official charity. Everyone has their own reason to take part and we wanted to shine the spotlight on a very special young man whose story will hopefully inspire you to join him on Sunday 2nd July…

12 year Leon Hoey plays in our Physical Disability Rugby League (PDRL) team and is taking part in our Family Mile along with his PDRL team mates. Team Manager Mat Jackson explains why the team have got behind Leon to support him;

“Leon is a great character to have around the team. He’s a lot older than his years. He always puts the team first and whether it’s in training or a game, he gives his all as he doesn’t like to let his team down. That’s why the PDRL team have decided to support Leon with his Family Mile, he has the heart of a lion.”

We spoke with Leon’s mum Ann-Marie who said;

“Leon is doing the Family Mile two days after eye correction surgery. He’s not been able to train or play rugby because of the op on 28th. Leon is raising money for the Warrington Wolves Physical Disability Rugby League (PDRL) team because he can’t be with them on the field, so he wants to be able to help them off the field by raising much needed funds for the Foundation. The team and the staff have been Leon’s lifeline and been there for him to support him and keep him going.

Just 4 months ago, he was told that he had to have to hip surgery, but we were delighted to find out his hard work at training and playing rugby has prevented that - last week he got the amazing news that he doesn’t need to go back for a further review for a year!

Leon wouldn’t be the person he is today without the rugby and the support.”

Leon, you certainly do have the heart of a lion and we’re so proud of you and the hard work and dedication you show to your sport and your team. You truly have #WireDNA
